Pen Underwriting can today announce that Ian Summerfield has been appointed Head of Cyber, with effect from 1 January 2024, as its focus on internal leadership development continues.
Ian is currently Commercial Director of Pen’s Hazardous Goods & Environmental Industries niche within its Specialty division, having joined Pen in April 2020 from RSA. His promotion will see Ian take on the strategic and operational leadership of the dedicated cyber practice at the turn of the year after a comprehensive handover period, succeeding Hamir Patel.
An underwriter by profession with a strong commercial background in business development, broker relationship management and portfolio performance across multiple commercial lines, Ian brings more than 15 years’ experience to the role.
Adrian Scott, Managing Director of International, said: “Ian’s impressive leadership and business development credentials, track record in successful portfolio performance, and real passion for motivating teams to win through collaboration and customer excellence make him the ideal successor as leader of our dedicated cyber practice.
“Cyber represents a huge growth opportunity for Pen’s International division, with clients spread across key territories around the world, and Ian’s appointment is another great example of our ability to match the ambition of our business with the ambition of our talent. He will be taking up the reins of a fantastic team and cyber portfolio in great shape, primed for further expansion.”
Ian Summerfield said: “Cyber continues to be one of the insurance industry’s fastest growing and most rapidly evolving areas of risk and exposure. That brings equal amounts of opportunity and challenge for an underwriting business focused on portfolio performance. And it’s a challenge I’m excited to take on.
“Brokers look to Pen’s cyber practice for access to both technical underwriting expertise and fast, flexible digitally enabled solutions. And colleagues look to it too, as an invaluable source of complementary cover for their clients – cover that is able to close a protection gap which rising digital exposures seek to widen. I’m looking forward to working with our team of cyber specialists to continue delivering brilliantly on both fronts.”
